The
landscape around the NSW towns of Goulburn and Taralga has been my
inspiration for this series, produced over the last eighteen months.
Having grown up on the eastern seaboard of Australia, the completely
different landscape and atmosphere of the southern tablelands made a
huge impression on me. I was struck by the rounded hills, the pockets
of stark vegetation, meandering roads, broad open skies and scenery that
has been dramatically altered by human intervention. It is the changing
light and colours across the seasons that I have tried to convey in paint.
The Australian landscape has always held a fascination for me. It is
the intensity of the light, the colours and diversity of the different
landscapes, its vastness, vitality, bleakness and brilliance.
Within
my paintings I like to combine and contrast different elements, often positioning
forms at the edges of the canvas to suggest a continuation
beyond the viewer's range of vision. I try to mirror this contrast
in my work by combining opposites in paint effects - transparent
and opaque, intense and subdued, blurred and detailed, loose and tight.
My goal is for a painting to reveal itself slowly and for it to be a
delight each time it is seen.
Painting is
always a struggle between what an artist sees and feels and what
is finally conveyed. For me, success is measured in whether
the painting creates a distinct sense of place.
