In 2003 Shannon won the Josephine Ulrick Ceramic Art Award for Excellence at the 22nd Gold Coast International Ceramic Award. Shannon is one of the youngest artists ever to win this prize. In 2004 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. The following year she travelled to Europe on her scholarship and studied in Italy with well known ceramicist, Marino Moretti. Herbarium is a collection of handmade porcelain bowls. Their forms are soft and undulating and the oval shape of the bowls reference the cameo. Each piece has a sepia portrait of a leaf on the matt exterior while the interior of the form glows with rich, saturated colour. Shannon uses the convention of portrait painting to examine the intricacies of leaves and petals. The rich interior functions as a metaphor against the detailed exterior reminding us of the mystery and hidden spectrum to be found in the smallest leaf. This is an exhibition about looking at the detail, getting drawn into nature, the burst of life and colour that is behind a small seed or a dry leaf.
