The writhing, ambiguous lifeforms that burst to the surfaces of Gilfillan's paintings, are suggestive of Dr Seuss characters. Titles such as, Run! I am, I am, said Sam, herald a hyperactive imagination that is simultaneously controlled and chaotic. These shimmering sea and earthscapes harbour morphic explosions created with such feathered delicacy that the seeming turbulence evaporates into joyful playfulness. A decade of reading nursery rhymes to his children has both tamed and released a wild imagination and a fearless intelligence. These recent works by Sulman finalist, John Gilfillan are his best and most exciting yet. Mind
