Christmas Wish List - Special Exhibition

In conjunction with Featured Artist - Karen Atkins

Salmon Galleries is proud to present our Christmas Wish List selection, and the exhibition by Karen Atkins,Wayfarers .

Exhibition dates: 3 December to 21 December, 2005

The seeds of this exhibition were sown by thoughts of the traveller, the wayfarer – the fine line between a bold adventure and sheer foolhardiness, or between the hero and the ratbag.

Woven into the Australian fabric are figures who said ‘why not?’ and set forth, without whom much of this continent would have remained unexplored and indeed undiscovered. These paintings are about a couple of these characters, an attempt to understand their daring and courage.

All of the paintings touch upon journeys both foolish and necessary, internal and external, and the characters who stepped out of the mainstream to fulfil their yearnings and maintain their integrity, even in the face of ridicule.

A group of these paintings is based upon the story of Lennie Gwyther and his pony ‘Ginger Mick’. At the age of 9 and alone, Lennie decided to ride his pony from Leongatha in Victoria to Sydney in order to witness the opening of the Harbour Bridge, a journey of 1000 km.

It is unimaginable today that this actually happened yet I love the idea of the dreams and daring that fed this quest and I wanted to pay homage to those who grasp the adventure of life.
