Salmon Galleries is proud to present Life
is just a bowl of cherries by Suzanna Lang. Suzanna
Lang approaches her still life subjects as other artists would the human
form. She imbues familiar, domestic objects with such potent vitality that
they transcend the mundane to enter the realm of the metaphysical. Life is just a bowl of cherries signals Lang’s maturing confidence with both her subject and technique. Her paintings comment on the big things in life by celebrating the small things – a bowl of cherries can be just that, or it can symbolize the truth of beauty, the reason for being or a mother’s loving care. While retaining her reverence for the still life subject, Lang underpins this new series with a more visible sense of humour and playfulness. As before, the challenge is to reconcile a commitment to spontaneity and unpredictability without jeopardizing the tradition and serenity of her subjects. This is a balancing act that Lang has now mastered.
At a distance these paintings reveal calm interior spaces and familiar objects quietly abstracted so they evolve into gentle matrixes of sensual expression. Up close, the canvas surfaces are vigorously worked with liquid icy patinas and chalky crusts of warmed milk-paint. Lang is passionate about the surface and this experimental play with glazes and oil finishes is part of what she describes as the balancing act of her current work.
The pleasure of these paintings resides in the subtle resolution of sensual expression with the artist’s delight in the action of working.
