Galleries is proud to present New Works Still
Life by Suzanna
Lang.
Still life subjects are seldom revealed in such a state of calculated urgency. The challenge for Lang has been to reconcile a commitment to spontaneity and unpredictability without jeopardizing the tradition and serenity of her subject matter. The everyday objects she takes as her subjects, rest still on the flattened surface: the vermillion fruit, the warped rattan basket, the vessel of wildflowers – icons to the simple and profound processes of living. I try to let the paint surface dictate, which brings a spontaneous reaction, and a kind of ‘truth or dare’ situation with a touch of the unexpected. At a distance these paintings reveal calm interior spaces and familiar objects quietly abstracted so they evolve into gentle matrixes of sensual expression. Up close, the canvas surfaces are vigorously worked with liquid icy patinas and chalky crusts of warmed milk-paint. Lang is passionate about the surface and this experimental play with glazes and oil finishes is part of what she describes as the balancing act of her current work... My paintings explore contrasts: between the past and present, the complex and the simple, the disposable world and the traditional world. The pleasure of these paintings resides in the subtle resolution of sensual expression with the artist’s delight in the action of working. I approach each new painting as an experience, a challenge to push myself further, to see and feel what is beyond. For further information,
